Hyaluronic Acid: The Hydration Specialist
What it is: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body — in joints, connective tissue, and skin. In skincare, it's used as a humectant, meaning it draws water toward itself and holds it there.
What it does: HA attracts moisture from the environment (and from deeper layers of skin) and binds it to the surface, temporarily plumping fine lines caused by dehydration and restoring a smoother, bouncier appearance. One thing to know: Vitamin C — especially L-ascorbic acid — is the most finicky of the three. It oxidizes when exposed to light and air, turning yellow or brown and losing effectiveness. Look for opaque or airtight packaging, and store it away from heat and sunlight. Formulations with a lower pH tend to be more potent but can also be more irritating, so introduce this one gradually if you have sensitive skin.
Can You Use All Three Together?
Generally, yes — hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C are considered compatible with each other.
